HOWTO spot a spammer

The spam game has changed. Tons of links to wienie pills and teen porn were the originals. Captcha and Akismet more or less did away with that. Then the vague, brief comment, like “Excellent” or “Good luck” took hold. They linked back to the wienie pill, porn, or poker sites.

Now the spammers are narrow casting. I’ve gotten several spam comments from treatment centers that on the surface are innocuous enough. Upon further investigation the “treatment centers” begin to resemble snake oil, offering “alternative” methods and “miraculous” results. If it sounds too good to be true …

I have a special disdain for people that take advantage of people when they’re their most vulnerable. While I feel sorry for them in the same sense I do a pedophile, I realize we must protect ourselves and each other from them.

Anyway, here’s the latest spamment I’ve gotten:

jdboone | coh19@yahoo.com | centerofhope.wordpress.com | IP: 97.97.184.103Yeah, Dude, I can see how you’re so screwed up, to be sure. I definitely identify with the cooked cerebral cortex thing. The mind truly is a terrible thing, so let’s smoke it… I’m thinkin’ of writing some crack head memoirs myself– Jimmy CrackHead (I Don’t Care).

Anyway, nature or nurture… Well, I say I am Not who you say I am,
except in your own mind field. I am who i say i am, whether I happen to feel it or not. I am a product of me. I have to let go of all things crap that have been crammed down my throat since that first cold, winter’s day. Easier said, I know– but doable (doable, is that a word?). Life is a journey; if I’m lucky I’ll run into myself along the way…

As far as the drug balancing act is concerned, I’ve never met anyone with a Zoloft deficiency, but I could be wrong. I believe all such problems are related to poor nutrition, and can be corrected without any type of poison whatsoever. Check this out– http://www.truehope.com

The text in green is a surefire indication that somebody somewhere is peddling something. And anyone capable of uttering anything like “I’ve never met anyone with a Zoloft deficiency” has almost certainly spent time on a car lot, the pulpit, or involved in some sort of pyramid scheme.

I recommend checking all links a new commenter provides before approving their first comment. At some point they’ll get slicker and stop including the spam in the initial comment, but I haven’t seen that (yet).

Yeah. The only focus for a majority these days is not “How much money can I make?” but “How much of YOUR money can I take?”

Apparently I am a candidate for life/auto/home/illness insurance as well as a variety of ‘helpful’ pills etc. Fortunately, both wordpress and hotmail have caught everything sent my way so far (knock on wood – course there’s another spam opening, I’m sure).

Anyhoo, good advice on screening firts commentors anyways, just to be safer. Take care.

Yep the reason why my comments are now moderated. Way too many “Great post come visit me at http://www.bullshit.com” comments which caught my attention after the same comment appeared on twenty of my posts word for word. The joy of blogging.

If I felt better I could rant “around” this topic forever. Not what this blog’s about though. When money is all that matters, and it is all that matters, the end almost always justifies the means, especially if there’s lots of money to be made.

Great tip to follow. I’m glad you’re sharing it. :-)

Thanks for the info! I had no idea! I guess I am still too new and unread to warrant spam! I moderate all my comments because I am paranoid. ;) I figured I didn’t want to hassle with idiots who had nothing better to do than debate the “reality” of depression, so I just decided to moderate from the start, but I think that has cost me some comments, too. Don’t know. Anyway, love reading your stuff! Thanks for the insight and experience!

I didn’t realize that http://www.bullsh*t.whatever was an actual site, guess I should have figured.

etta – I generally won’t read blogs that don’t allow comments or that won’t post mine. If I like the blog, I’ll probably keep reading it, but after a couple of rejections, I’m not commenting anymore.

untreatable – we’re living in the Age of Bullshit I’m afraid.

That’s why I’ve got that banned comments thing. It’s an unfortunate way of keeping spammers out but necessary. For me anyway.

I, too, have my comments moderated. I haven’t gotten too many spammers, but I have gotten some. And I had someone post a link to a virus in a comment, so I feel that I’m looking out for my readers by moderating them.

I’ve been lucky with comments so far, but I get emails telling me how much they enjoyed my blog (which one, I’ve got 5 very different ones?)and would I like to link to them; Something like an Alaskan ice hockey fanzine when I’m a 52 year old mother of 3!

I confess that I have to get my dictionary out for some of these spam things – I’m learning a lot of new words and – ideas(!).

Those BASTARDS! Getting a bit more smart, they are….

  12. 12 Prester John April 16, 2008 at 10:48 am

angry – If only greedy was synonymous with stupid, and super-cool with rich and happy, you and me’d be in high cotton.

anjiknut – Maybe you could link to my primary site, the Basset Hound Cloning Project, or better yet, invest?

    Nice to hear from you.

BPD – I’m not big on the whole narcing thing but I could make an exception for some bastard linking to a virus. Alerting their network administrator would be a good idea. Your guess is as good as mine on how you go about doing that though.

Your last response to angry(ballerina) actually just put a smile on my face. Much needed, thanks.

If you're interested in reading a fairly detailed account of addiction and depression, Cracked Head Memoirs might be for you. It basically tells how it was and what happened. Writing it helped me go from active addiction to recovery yet again.
